Staying Positive and Avoiding Depression During the Lockdown

The past couple of months have been tough on all of us. With the Coronavirus taking charge of the economy, businesses all across the world have been slowing down. Many of us have even seen a cut in salaries, and are finding new ways to make ends meet. To add fuel to fire, we have been stuck in our houses for months, with short, quick and planned trips for groceries once in a while. The saying “no man is an island” holds true. Another common phrase which has proven itself in the current situation is, “familiarity breeds contempt”. Locked up in houses and seeing familiar faces at every waking moment, doing the same things and the same routine can easily drive us to fall into the pit of depression. However, the truth is, you don’t need to always wait for the sun to rise. Sometimes, you have to be light.

Here are 5 ways in which you can remain positive and avoid depression during this lockdown:

Focus on your strengths:

This is the time to explore yourself more and understand the skills that you have and what you excel in. Do not let your mind succumb to depression and let negative thoughts keep running through your mind. Try to read many articles and blogs by professionals and influencers and understand how you can use your skillset in a post-COVID world.

Work on your weaknesses:

Spend your time improving in areas where you lag. Do a few online courses and harness skills which are still raw. Who knows, you might even tap some new skills on your journey to sharpening existing ones.

Laugh, just keep laughing:

This is easier said than done, but what is your next option? Spend some time watching your favourite comedy shows, and laugh a bit. Let your mind relax and let your laughter fill the house. There is a reason people have said that “laughter is the best medicine”.

Change your routine:

Try to avoid doing the same things in the same pattern every day. This could lead to a robotic action which is far more than what your mind and body were built for. Depending on what you like to do, you can play around a bit with your time and make your day more exciting.

Preserve family ties:

As much as you love someone, too much time together can pull you apart. You need your space and so do the people you are living with. Spend some time on your own, away from the familiar faces. During this time, do something you enjoy-play some music, create a dessert, do anything you love.

What lies ahead:

The world will never be the same. The way we work, the way we communicate, the way we learn. Everything will change. Equip yourself with ideas and skills that will work in the future. Speak to market analysts, and field experts and listen to a few of their lectures. Prepare yourself for a world where everything is new.
