Here are some basic electrical safety tips that can keep everyone safe from harm

Basic electric safety tips can come in handy if you are faced with a power failure situation. It is also important to keep your family safe and aware of these tips. Here are a few tips that cover the basics of electrical safety for your house.

Replace Damaged Cords

Exposed or damaged wiring and power cords are a risk that we may not be aware of but can cause tremendous damage, and they should not be overlooked. If you find any loose wires with the protective coating stripped away - call an electrician immediately to replace them or cover them with electrical tape as soon as possible. Check the wires in your home regularly to avoid any such accidents.

Don't overload

Although the outlets in most modern homes are designed to withstand high voltage, plugging too many devices at the same time can cause a small explosion or fire. At the same time, it is also not advised to over-use extension cords or multi-outlet converters for appliances.

Safeguard Your Appliances

Unplug all your appliances when not in use and keep the cords safely packed. Regularly check for moisture on the plugs of your kitchen appliances - water conducts electricity so even the slightest exposure can be dangerous, so make sure to wipe any spills immediately from your plugs to keep them dry. If any of your appliances are exposed to water replace them immediately.

Warning Signs

Things to look out for:

  • If you feel a slight shock when you touch a switch or plug something in.
  • If your appliance gives off a faint burning smell.
  • If your outlet plates are warm when you touch them.
  • If your fuses blow frequently.
  • If your light dims or flickers constantly.

At Malles we make use of top-class electrical equipment to ensure the safety of all our homeowners. However, there is quite a bit of danger involved with improper use, especially if you have kids around as they are often curious. Carefully monitor all safety measures when using electricity to ensure the safety of yourself and your family.
